The Trainer
We are delighted to have our horses with not only one of Australia’s, but the world’s best trainers, Ciaron Maher.
Ciaron Maher
‘Don’t let the laid-back demeanour fool you, under those curly locks lies a fierce will to purchase, train and race the best horses in the country.’ Apprentice to CS Hayes then a successful jumps jockey, including captaining the Australia team against Ireland in the International Jockey Challenge, Ciaron realised his size would deny his riding ambitions. Despite that, his love for racing and his natural interest and curiosity in training saw him commit to a career as a trainer at a young age. Knowing you learn best from the best, he spent time with Bart Cummings, Aidan O’Brien and Willie Mullins before starting in his own right, with 6 boxes on his dad’s farm. He knows you never stop learning and continues to connect with the greats, only last year spending time with Wesley Ward (USA), Roger Charlton (UK) and Richard Hannon (UK), Andre Fabre (France) and Joseph O’Brien (IRE). In just over 10 years, Ciaron Maher has risen to the top of the Australian training ranks
Locations
The Ballarat training facilities (that he believes to be amongst the best in the world) with satellites at Caulfield and Sydney, a custom-made pre-training and spelling operation at Pakenham and hand-picked beach facilities at Balnarring and Fingal, Ciaron truly believes he has the team and the facilities to be among – if not the best – training operations in Australia.

Australian Racing
The Australian horse racing encounter is one-of-a-kind, with its focus on substantial prize money, exceptional racing standards, and active participation in the sporting culture.
Prize money
Australia is unrivalled in prize money, with plans to host 95 races offering A$1 million or more in 2024, occurring approximately every 3.8 days. Over the last five years, total nationwide prize money has surged by 45%, representing the most significant increase among major racing jurisdictions.
A sport embraced
Throughout this expansive island nation, spanning every state and territory, the impact of racing and breeding is substantial. Over 100,000 individuals, representing one in every 254 people, have ownership shares in racehorses, showcasing a widespread involvement. Such extensive ownership levels position our trainers as global leaders in communication, ensuring that owners remain integral to the horse's journey, regardless of their geographical distance. This commitment is evident in the growing number of owners residing overseas.
Racing Excellence
Australia takes pride in hosting the highest count of esteemed Group 1 races globally, reaching 95 in 2024. Annually, international handicappers convene to assess the top 100 Group Ones, and for four of the last five years, Australia has consistently outpaced all other nations in the number of these prestigious races hosted.
Unique Atmosphere
Prominent racecourses are strategically situated in the heart of urban centres, offering a racing experience of unparalleled grandeur and excitement on significant race days—a spectacle that stands unrivalled by any other location across the globe. The central positioning of these major racecourses within bustling cities adds an extra layer of vibrancy and accessibility, creating a unique atmosphere that enhances the overall enjoyment and spectacle of thoroughbred racing for enthusiasts and spectators alike.
